Very Unofficial Guide to Canadian Music Week 2017

Very Unofficial Guide to Canadian Music Week 2017

Ok I’ve taken my afternoon and sifted through the CMW craziness, I’ve looked at some other recommendation lists, because why the hell not. I’ve listened to new bands and fell in love with old ones I haven’t listened to in years making this list. I can honestly say that If I had to choose a line up to see this year. My “Must See” if you will… This is it. This list relies on a couple things that are basically magic so it’s never going to happen for me. Mostly because like every CMW there are shows that overlap and shows that will probably be sold out, or I may just get a little stoned on the night of and completely space on it while listening to the band at home. So I have to have the ability to be in two places at once AND remember stuff. I told you, magic.

Dropout is not only encouraging the fuck out of you to go see live music, attend as many of the below shows as you can (it’s cool, kind of important; and it’s a better chance you’ll get laid if you leave the house and talk to people!) we’re also encouraging you to submit your pics from the below shows! That’s right! Do our jobs for us, and we’ll publish the hell out of that will your name all over it and shit!

Here is my dream-team – justice-league – top-picks for Canadian Music Week 2017. I dare you to see as many as you can.

TUESDAY, APRIL 18TH

Silver Love Club | Adelaide Hall | 8:45pm

Four guys from Sydney Australia being sexy all over the place playing “classic indie-rock”. These guys are pretty cool, get here on time and start the night.

The Huaraches | Bovine Sex Club | 11pm

This might be the most fun you have at a show or the most what the fuck moment you’ve had this CMW, instrumental surf-punk. That’s all.

Bleeker | Mod Club | 12am

Check these guys out before they get all famous and shit, then the shows get expensive and way to big.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19TH

Good Charlotte | Danforth Music Hall |  6pm

Because why the fuck not Good Charlotte? And why the fuck not way the hell out on the Danforth?! Love you Danforth Music Hall!

Danko Jones | Velvet Underground | 10pm

Remember “Bounce”? Danko Jones is still jock-rocking it up, and the more nostalgic I get…

Silver Love Club | Piston | 11pm

I know I talked about these guys already but they came from Australia so… go see them. The Piston is an even better venue for a more intimate show, and the bartenders are cool. Checkout our article about the best CMW 2017 venues to party at here.

Bitch Falcon | Drake Underground | 11:20pm

This self described “straight up rock band” is actually really cool. Yes that is an Irish accent. No they’re not probably drunk, don’t be fucking rude.

L.A. Witch | Lee’s Palace | 12am

Why do people try to compare L.A. Which to other bands “Kim Deal mixed with Pink Floyde” and shit like that. L.A. Which is a solid sound that is obviously a mix of Sonic Youth and well cooked vegan ham. Get high and go see L.A. Witch, love yourself more.

THURSDAY, APRIL 20TH

The Honest Heart Collective | Horseshoe Tavern | 8pm

These guys are from Thunder Bay, they have tremendous talent and I’m pretty sure they are a band in part, to get dates… or at least get you dates.

The Sumner Brothers | Dakota Tavern | 10pm

Slow things down at Dakota Tavern with The Sumner Brothers. This is the kind of western country folk that you drink whisky too and contemplate life and junk. No party beer specials here. I shouldn’t say that there may be beer specials, if not drink some whisky and get lost in the music. They make it easy.

Matt Mays | Lee’s Palace | 11pm

Get back on the CMW fun-times train with some Matt Mays. This is another act to check out at a place like Lee’s while you have the chance, before his shows are sold out or moving to larger venues and causing me to print the wrong tickets the day of… Stupid life. Matt Mays will make it better…

Whitehorse | Phoenix Concert Theatre | 11:50pm

I’m excited by this show, genuinely.

Bad Animal | Cherry Cola’s | 2am

Bad Animal are terrible people (their words), nah they are actually pretty great. Check out our Bad Animal interview here. This is going to be a late show, late shows are when CMW shows and Cherry Cola shows get really really good… so let’s mash them up with an awesome not-a-party-brand from Calgary. Bad Animal shows are notoriously crazy.

FRIDAY, APRIL 21TH

Puffy L’s | Danforth Music Hall | 8:25pm

Get your hip-hop on this CMW – this is going to be a kick-ass show. There is also an earlier all ages show at 5:30pm

Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs | Garrison | 10pm

Holy fuck I WISH I drank beer, like in large amounts so I could enjoy this the best way possible. This is some high energy awesomeness. I love bands that sing about hard-drug use to banjo music and harmonicas.

Wolf Parade | Great Hall | 11pm

To be honest I only put Wolf Parade on this list because their name is Wolf Parade and I wanted to write “Wolf Parade” a whole whack load of times. Wolf Parade. Having said that enough these guys are genuinely really cool and some of what makes Canadian Indie Music some of the best, ever.

The Dandy Warhols | Lee’s Palace | 12:12am

So The Dandy Warhols and I have a very long and personal history they don’t know about. To the point I wasn’t allowed to listen to them while writing this article because it was feared I would go off on a tangent about The Dandy fucking Warhols. I haven’t seen them in years, but I plan to rectify that on Friday. If you haven’t seen them check them out, if you have seen them, see them again.

SATURDAY, APRIL 22TH

Devarrow | Rivolli | 6pm

The perfect way to start Saturday night, these guys are some soft chill guitars, strong melodies and a beautiful dude voice. Rock on Devarrow… rock on.

The Dead Projectionists | Horseshoe Tavern | 8pm

These guys made it on the  list due to the proximity to the Rivolli, and also they are trippy cool fun and worth taking in.

Crown Lands | Bovine Sex Club | 9pm

Ok your Saturday should be in drive by now, a light buzz at least. It’s time for some loud, big, bold sounds. Crown Lands brings that big western sound to an alley in the bronx.

Teenanger | Garrison | 11pm

Teenanger is on my must see list. Check out our interview with them here. Sharp guitars, fast drums, general angry fun…

Generationals | Adelaide Hall | 11pm

If you’re a fan of New Wave, or just good music – this is a show worth noting and checking out.

New Fries | Handelbar | 12:30am

Get some weird love in your hearts ready for New Fries, if you didn’t take your music week mushrooms yet, do it now.

SUNDAY, APRIL 23RD

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY | REBEL | 8pm

Post-rock from Texas, this is the final show and it’s probably going to be one of the best ones this CMW. At least for the bigger shows.
