Ottawa Bluesfest – Day 5

After a couple of days away from the festival grounds, it was clear that Bluesfest fans were more than ready to get back to the music on Day 5. There was a noticeable buzz in the air from the moment the gates opened, with excitement building throughout the evening for the night’s headliners. From young fans to longtime festival veterans, one thing united the crowd: the iconic Wishbone sailor hats that seemed to be everywhere across the grounds.

LeBreton Stage
The evening on the LeBreton Stage kicked off with Mecca of Stank, who delivered a colourful, high-energy set packed with funk-infused grooves. While the band’s eclectic style drew mixed reactions from some attendees, their vibrant stage presence and infectious energy made for an entertaining opening to the night.
Next up, Reuben and The Bullhorn Singers delivered one of the most memorable collaborations of the day. Blending rock, indie influences, and the powerful voices of the Indigenous Bullhorn Singers, the performance was a remarkable celebration of both music and culture. The variety of sounds and the genuine connection between the performers created an unforgettable experience for the audience.
Closing out the stage were The Sons of Legion, who drew an enormous crowd and quickly reminded everyone why they have developed such a devoted following. Opening with “Real Thang” and closing with “POWER,” they delivered a dynamic and captivating performance from start to finish. The crowd danced, sang, and moved along with every song, feeding off the band’s undeniable energy. By the end of the set, one thing was clear: The Sons of Legion truly live up to the power their music projects.

Barney Danson Theatre
Inside the Barney Danson Theatre, Dominique Way offered a completely different but equally impressive experience. At first glance, her quiet presence and gentle demeanor gave the impression of a delicate performer. However, the moment she began singing, the room was captivated. Her vocals carried a richness and strength that far exceeded expectations, filling the theatre with emotion and leaving the audience completely swooned by her performance.

Hard Rock Stage
Over on the Hard Rock Stage, Nikki D & The Sisters of Thunder had no trouble keeping the crowd moving. Dressed in coordinated outfits and radiating confidence, this powerhouse group delivered a set full of energy, strong musicianship, and infectious rhythm. Their chemistry on stage was undeniable, and they had fans dancing throughout their entire performance. They are certainly a group worth keeping an eye on.

Following them, Black Joe Lewis brought authentic Southern blues to the festival. His deep, soulful sound was delivered with confidence and sincerity, creating a performance that felt both timeless and deeply genuine. His musicianship and stage presence demonstrated a maturity and wisdom that resonated strongly with the audience.

The night concluded with the All-Star Women’s Blues Showcase, one of the standout performances of the day. Featuring an incredible collection of talent, the showcase highlighted the depth and diversity of women in blues music. Each artist had an opportunity to shine individually before joining together for powerful ensemble performances. The tent was packed, the energy remained high throughout, and many festival-goers left calling it one of the highlights of the entire day.

RBC Stage
The RBC Stage delivered an impressive lineup that kept the momentum going all evening.

Natasha Bedingfield proved why she remains one of pop music’s most beloved performers. The London-born singer had fans of all ages singing along, with many commenting on both the beauty and remarkable range of her voice. Opening with “Love Like This,” she treated the crowd to hit after hit before finishing with fan favourites “Unwritten” and “These Words.” The entire performance felt like a joyful celebration shared by thousands.

Myles Smith followed with a set that perfectly complemented the night’s growing energy. Backed by an enthusiastic band, he consistently engaged the audience through simple gestures, movement across the stage, and genuine interactions. His ability to make such a large crowd feel personally connected was impressive, turning spectators into active participants throughout the performance.
Finally, Conan Gray brought Day 5 to a memorable close. From the moment he took the stage with “My World,” the crowd sang every lyric back to him. Gray’s thoughtful stage presence, elegant movement, and constant efforts to engage every section of the audience showcased his commitment to creating a personal connection with fans. Whether posing for distant audience members or interacting with those near the stage, he ensured everyone felt included in the experience. The crowd’s enthusiasm never faded, carrying the energy all the way to the final song of the night.

Day 5 marked a fantastic start to another week of Bluesfest. From powerful blues showcases and unforgettable collaborations to singalong pop hits and passionate headlining performances, the festival grounds were once again filled with the music, energy, and community that make Bluesfest such a special event.
