Lemonade by Lowell

Canadian indie-pop artist Lowell has experienced her fill of music industry ups-and-downs in a short period of time. Originally from Calgary AB, Elizaben Lowell Boland moved to Toronto at the age of 18 to study music at U of T – That’s the University of Toronto for anyone not in the know. Word is it’s a pretty good school or something. Everyone I know that went to UofT just came out with PoliSci majors so I didn’t even know you could go there for other stuff.

Lowell dropped out of school and began working as a dancer at a gentlemen’s club. In her spare time she began recording demo songs which eventually caught the attention of a music producer and the rest, as they say, is a bit of history. Lowell’s debut album released in 2014 titled We Loved Her Dearly, is a critically acclaimed sex-posative exploration or self-love, LGBTQ rights and abuse issues.

The artist is no longer a dancer and has left behind the toxic and manipulative relationships that brought her there in the first place, but she’s held on to every bit of empowerment the experience and leaving it brought her. Lowell has collaborated with members of Coldplay, A-Ha and Mew as well as artists such as Demi Lavado, Hailee Steinfeld and Lennon Stella. She’s even gone double-platinum lending her voice to the track This is Not a Love Song by the German born Canadian artist Bulow.

This is the first single off Lowells new album – due out sometime in 2021 – a comment on what the artist describes as toxic positivity, this is Lemonade by Lowell.

Baby It Has To Fall by Efrim Manuel Menuck

This is a track by Canadian artist Efrim Manuel Menuck released on Constellation Records. The track is part of constellation’s corona borealis long-play series, and the track itself is 16 minutes long. No I don’t have an interview lined up this week which is the only reason on earth I think this might be a good idea.

I want to take a moment and tell you a bit about Efrim Manuel Menuck and Constellation records as I’ve never talked about either of them on the show before but they have both been a big part of my personal Canadian music journey. There’s a point I think in everyone’s life when you realize the world is bigger than what you thought it was, when you realize the universe is a more complicated place than you’d ever thought possible. When a friend shared his compact disk copy of Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Atenei to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor in the year 2000, my world of music and what music could be was changed forever. That album is 20 years old now and it absolutely stands up today – maybe just not for a new music show. Constellation  Records is arguably one of the bravest independent record labels out there, having made their mark in Canadian music by supporting and publishing some of the most cutting-edge/avant garde Canadian artists including Markus Floats, Do Make Say Think and Jessica Moss.

Constellation Records describes Menuck as “Operating outside expected genre, and largely outside the music industry altogether, Menuck is one of our generation’s most unwavering and poetic anarcho-punk iconoclasts.”

As I mentioned this track is part of the Constellation Records Corona Borealis long-play series, so the whole point of the series is long-play tracks. Let’s prove my radio teacher wrong and let’s all sit back and chill in the moment for about 16 minutes – smoke em if ya got em –  and take-in an incredible piece of art by a truly talented Canadian independent artist, this is the new track Baby It Has to Fall by Efrim Manuel Menuck.
