Faces by The Roughnotes

The Roughnotes are a Toronto based indie rock band featuring Colin Brady, Henry John, and Charlie Cohen. The band debuted their self-titled album in 2011 – It’s a great listen full of indie riffs and an electric guitar with a personality – with even a little bit of ska I think in there for good measure. I know I say this all the time – the band has very much evolved their sound, and that’s like one of my favourite things in music.

It’s a pretty aggressive comparison, dropping a Radiohead bomb on these guys, and I’m not going to exactly… BUT Radiohead is one of those bands that inspires me because album to album Radiohead sounds like Radiohead but also never sounds like the band you’ve heard on the last Radiohead album.

The Roughnotes first album and this album also could have been written by different bands, if – like Radiohead – it wasn’t for the fact that it’s the same band. I guess music is kind of abstract that way – part of the fun of music – in my dumb opinion at least – is imagining what happened to the people who write it, what contributed to any band’s sound evolving and maturing the ways that they do. Like many things, I may just be overthinking it – but isn’t that just part of the fun of life? This is Faces from ‘And the Lost Cause Chronicles Vol. 1’ out now on all major streaming platforms.

Nothing Changes by PUP

This is Nothing Changes by PUP – it’s from their new album that was dropped back in October – the album is called This Place Sucks Ass – and damn… yeah it sure does, at least sometimes. Here’s PUP.

That was PUP and Nothing Changes from their new album This Place Sucks Ass. I wanted to play that one because it’s been a hard year and I hope that maybe some frustrated punk music about how the world never changes, might inspire some changes in the world.

Halfway by Moscow Apartment

Moscow Apartment is an indie band from Toronto Canda, who could also be described as a talented duo with several guest musicians joining them from time to time – to record songs and play live shows. Brighid Fry and Pascale Padilla released their self-titled EP in 2017 and earlier this year in July they released their second EP Better Daughter on Hidden Pony Records. Here’s Halfway by Moscow Apartment.

That’s some folk music niceness for your day. That was Moscow Apartment and hope you dug it. Guys feel free to email me at benjamin[at]dropoutentertainment.ca – and let me know what you think of the show – what bands you want me to keep an eye on, what you wanna hear.

Kuta by Inland Doves

Inland Doves was conceived by Misener in Bali and born shortly after, in Toronto, Parkdale if we’re being specific and during the height of the Pandemic.

With over 20 years in the music industry, Misener has enlisted the help of friends and industry heavyweights such as Jason Pierce and Duncan Coutts from Our Lady Peace as well as Peril from Phantom High and Human Kebab from USS. I got to sit down with Rich over the world-wide-web to discuss the Inland Doves project and their first single Kuta – that’s K-U-T-A if you’re looking it up after this.

Hollywood Ending by The Darcys

The Darcy’s new album Fear and Loneliness came out this year which seems ridiculously appropriate. This is the first album to come out from the Darcey’s not on Arts & Crafts records. Instead, the album released in November, come out on the duos own label with the support of Warner Music – is it independent? Who’s to say… well me a little bit, but it’s a great track and unlike the dark depths of twinkle-town the Darcy’s explore. I just like supporting cool stuff. This is Hollywood Ending off The Darcy’s album Fear & Loneliness. It’s Good. It’s groovy. Check it out.

This is Your Life by Pineo & Loeb (Feat. Glass Tiger and Matt Mays)

The last song I want to share with you today – at the end of 2020 is what I can only say is a song that I think is pretty inspirational, which I think is pretty important right now. Canada is a big country, with 30 million people and sometimes it seems like a small ass town. Pineo and Loeb describe their new release as a collaboration between three generations of Canadian artists. The song is This is Your Life and it’s actually by Glass Tiger – yes, Glass Tiger. The 80’s Canadian band responsible for this classic … Don’t forget me when I’m Gone… The band (Glass Tiger) released an EP in 2019 called 33 with a new track called This is Your Life. One day Glass Tiger was looking for some remixes and they reached out to Halifax independent EDM producers Pineo and Loeb. This is where it’s just awesome. Pineo and Loeb, not only agreed to do the remix but proposed a whole new track with other artists on board to collaborate. Enter Matt Mays – who lent his voice to the new version of the track – and the three-generational collaboration track described by the duo was born. This is honestly pretty amazing. If you want to add a whole other layer to it – the Matt Mays voice contribution was inspired by the Brian Adams contribution to the Glass Tiger 1986 hit – Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone).

Dropout’s Jesse Read did an in-person interview about this release before it came out back in the before times when hugs and weekend plans were a thing. In the interview they talk about cultivating their own amazing opportunities through relentlessly emailing celebrities, I guess – it’s a good lesson. Just make sure your work is good before you hit send… Check out the full interview at dropoutentertainment.ca – this is Pineo & Loeb, Glass Tiger, and Matt Mays – this is, This is Your Life.
