Full Bio:
In the late night haze of a Parisian nightclub in 2013, Zach Gray and Edo Van Breemen’s concept for Unalaska was conceived. Inspired from their time spent working together on the indie cult vampire film Afflicted, the two musicians wrote a record pulling from cinematic film scores, indie pop and alternative sounds and the progressive sensibilities of Aughties rock bands like Doves, Radiohead and Starsailor. Much like the vampire film that inspired the record, themes weave around existential confusion, mystery and hidden identities.
Unalaska’s 2015 EP garnered great critical acclaim from Noisey, Stereogum and Clash. “…skin-crawling beats, dual vocals, post-punk guitar lines and hair-raising synths, it subtly evokes its horror-movie origins without resorting to spooky-ooky tackiness.”- Noisey
“It gives a feeling that there’s something exciting lurking just outside your vision, in the shadows of a candlelit room.” – Quip Magazine
However, following the release, the two musicians found their other projects demanding more of their attention. Zach Gray’s indie rock band The Zolas’ released their album Swooner which garnered the radio hits “Molotov Girls’ and “Swooner” and gained the band a Juno nomination. Edo Van Breemen found further success with film composition and pursued his career in Brooklyn. Dawn was rising for the two musicians and the lid was closed on Unalaska. The band’s unreleased recordings were consigned to live on a hard drive for the next 10 years.
Finally, after years in dormant exile, another 6 songs from the virtually forgotten 2013 sessions will be released on Light Organ Records.
The songs “LA”, “Pastures”, “Skinny Wire”, “Clignancourt ˇ”, “Gloss City” and “Halls of Grace” are brimming with energy and swagger. Influences from 2000’s electronic music, the sweeping aesthetics of Hanz Zimmer and enigmatic lyricism pull the listener into songs that have maintained vitality and excitement.
Like a well-preserved bottle of Pernod Fils absinthe, pulled from the dusty cellar of the French night club the two musicians first conspired in, the music yields rich texture, mystery and intrigue.
Unalaska’s full-length album 001 will be released on Light Organ Records in October, 2024
