“Thinking About You” by John River Wins Music Video of The Year At The Mississauga Music Awards

John River’s “Thinking About You” was awarded the prestigious Music Video of The Year Award at this year’s Mississauga Music Awards and after giving it a watch, you’ll see why, it’s more than a music video, it’s an emotional roller coaster of a short film! The annual Mississauga Music Awards nominations are based on artistic merit that includes quality, creativity & impact of work for Mississauga-based artists and “Thinking About You” exudes all three of those categories. The music video pulls the viewer in, giving them a false sense of security by starting off in a young girls room, adorned with stuffed animals and pink sheets as she talks on her cell phone, before the music cuts in soon revealing a dark scene with a man tied to a chair with his head covered. This cinematic video seamlessly switches between the bubblegum pop looking scene, and a much darker scenario. It’s not until a shocking twist towards the end that the viewer learns how the two scenes are connected and it hits you like a punch in the stomach. The video’s interlude also includes artful insertions of news clips including John River’s speech in front of The National Democratic Party, The BLM protest, The Dafonte Miller protest and a Mark Saunders speech enforcing the fact that John River is more than an artist, he is an activist using his music and videos to provoke thought and conversation. This is not the first time John’s video’s have been reckognized for their brilliance, with “Hope City II” being nominated for a Much Music Video Award for Best Hip Hop Music Video at the Much Music Video Awards, and it certainly won’t be the last.
