New Ones at Noon E25: The Universe Featuring Ray, The Dirty Nil, and Coleman Hell
My Fragline Mind by The Universe Featuring Ray
Ray Stern is a signer/songwriter from chafed-Kent Ontario Canada. She is an Ontario based artist in the truest sense of the term. Stern started playing music at the age of 15 and revived a Toronto Indie Music Award at the age of 18 for her success in the band The Peace Leeches. The band opened for bands such as The Trews, Finger Eleven, Sloan, and Arkells. Stern didn’t have much choice but to get used to the crowds and being on stage. Stern also fronted an American band, I couldn’t find the name of that one, but it’s worth mentioning only because it afforded the artist the opportunity to tour across the United States. Ray Stern now resides in London Ontario making music under the moniker The Universe Featuring Ray.
Her new album is called Co-create and it’s due out soon. The album is an experiment in collaboration and co-creation. Stern works with some incredible Canadian talent on this album including Michael Hanson of Glass Tiger, and Jose Contreras from By Divine Right. The first single off Co-create is out now and it’s called My Fragile Mind. It’s a pretty powerful track and you can see why she’s been described as the potential love-child of Alanis Morrisette and Kurt Cobane. I don’t know who said that by the way but it’s out there. This is My Fragile Mind by The Universe Featuring Ray.

Done With Drugs by The Dirty Nil
The Dirty Nil is a Canadian alt-rock band from Hamilton, Ontario. The band won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2017. The band consists of Luke Bentham, Ross Miller, and Kyle Fisher. The band has been making music since 2006 and saw some real traction with their 2018 album Master Volume. The Nil had a new album out January 1, 2021 – a date we are all looking forward to, regardless of how ultimately meaningless any numeric date really is. It’s still gonna feel irrationally nice to leave this year behind. We shared their new track Doom Boy on the show back on episode 15. And we’ve got a brand new one for you today.. well it’s been out for a few weeks now but we’re gonna play it here for the first time and we’re going to listen to an interview I did with Luke from The Dirty Nil.

Come Over by Coleman Hell
Coleman Hell is synonymous with some big songs like 2 heads and Fireproof, both released on Columbia Records, and both doing very well on charts worldwide. The artist is back with a new track this time in Vancouver label 604 Records. There’s a lot of interesting little indie tidbits around this artist, most notably that he’s one of the founders of the Toronto music collective Sideways. One of the reasons I wanted to highlight Coleman Hell in this episode was to draw attention to Sideways itself, as we’re going to be revisiting this group as a topic in a future show.
