For this author, seeing The Doobie Brothers in 2024 created a lifetime of memories and a flashback listening experience.  My first Doobie Brothers concert was back on September 9/1975 when the opening act was a young guitarist by the name of Peter Frampton at the Ottawa Civic Centre.

Fast forward to October 13/2024 at the Slush Puppie Place in Kingston, Ontario where The Doobie Brothers are celebrating their 50th Anniversary of touring from their humble beginnings in California in the early 1970’s.  The band never really disappeared from memories, they’ve been out there surviving break ups, member changes, and there have been songs on the radio to prove it.

The Doobies opened up the show with “Take Me In Your Arms” with a video backdrop of wild horses running in the wild. The soulful vocals of Michael MacDonald were featured in songs, “Minute by Minute”, “What a Fool Believes” and “You Belong To Me”.  Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston were front center on the stage, guitar strong, and singing in harmony as they rolled through “Rockin’ Down The Highway”, “Sweet Maxine”, “Long Train Runnin” and “Jesus Is Just Alright”. The evening included the newly released, “Cannonball” from the 2021, Liberte and an unreleased track, “Walk This Road” – about the price of freedom.

When the band broke out the classic, “China Grove”, there was a cell phone frenzy to capture a video highlight at the almost sold out Slush Puppie Place.  The last encore song of the night, “Listen To The Music” had everybody standing up, adding their vocal talents, and leaving smiles everywhere in the building.

For this classic rock fan, The Doobie Brothers brought the lights, all the hits, and a full two hour show worth remembering. Before you knew it while I was heading home and “Takin’ It To The Streets”.
