Interview with Kailan McGee – Explaining the Mythology Behind “Lady of The Moon” (Out Now!)
Kailan McGee isn’t just releasing music. She’s building worlds.
With her new album Lady of The Moon now out, the Canadian artist takes a bold step away from purely personal songwriting and into something far more immersive. Inspired by the mythology surrounding Germany’s Black Forest, the album unfolds like a storybook, complete with characters, overlapping narratives, and even moon phases replacing traditional track titles.
What started as a simple creative challenge quickly turned into something much bigger. McGee mapped out characters, storylines, and entire emotional arcs before writing a single note, treating the album less like a collection of songs and more like a fully realized universe.
“I wanted to test my imagination,” she explains. “I’ve always written from personal experience, but this time I wanted to see how far I could push storytelling.”
That shift paid off. Lady of The Moon feels intentional at every level, from its conceptual foundation to its visual identity. Instead of traditional music videos, McGee created paintings for each track, blending her songwriting with another form of creative expression and giving fans a deeper way to engage with the project.
The album’s origin is just as unexpected as its concept. The entire idea was sparked by a student mentioning “The Legend of the Wild Moon,” a moment that stuck with her and eventually snowballed into a full record.
It’s that openness to inspiration that defines McGee’s approach. Whether she’s writing about mythology or personal struggles, the goal stays the same: create something honest, push herself creatively, and connect with listeners in a real way.
And if her debut album proved anything, it’s that connection is already happening. With songs charting across multiple formats and reaching listeners far beyond what she expected, McGee is building momentum quickly.
Now, with Lady of The Moon officially out, she’s not slowing down anytime soon. In fact, she’s already written her next album.
