0Stella’s New Album Skyward Explores the Highs and Lows of Addiction Recovery

Skyward is the second album from Irish-Canadian alt-rock artist 0Stella and was just released today, November 3, 2023, on Dead Doll Records! If you’re a fan of conscious rock n roll, Skyward is a must listen, combining elements of folk and pop with hard hitting rock instrumentation and even harder hitting lyrics delivered from the uniquely powerful voice of 0Stella.  The album explores the highs and lows of addiction recovery and is the follow-up album to 2022’s Freefall.

“Where Freefall was about the plunge into the depths of addiction abuse, Skyward is about the gradual climb out of self-destruction. Beginning with defiance and ending in a place of self-acceptance, reflection and enlightenment…the blissful moments of suspension before the inevitable freefall once again. An ever-swinging pendulum of recovery,” 0Stella explains.

Merging Canadian rock tradition, Irish storytelling, and folk music, 0Stella’s sound combines the energy of Paramore and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with the tortured angst of The Frames’ earliest records. The Dublin-born, Edmonton-based artist includes a song in the Irish language (as Gaeilge) on the digital release of Skyward.

Driven by her passion for sustainability, 0Stella is committed to responsible touring. On Earth Day, April 20, 2022, with her bike, a tent, solar panel and carbon fibre guitar, she embarked on an awe-inspiring album tour of Canada, solo cycling from Victoria, BC to Halifax, NS. Covering an astonishing distance of over 5,400 kilometres, that tour ended on October 1, 2022. Throughout the journey, while advocating for environmental preservation, 0Stella forged genuine connections that resonated deeply with fellow Canadians after the prolonged isolation of the previous years.

0Stella spent the summer of 2023 in Irish residency and saw her perform a sell-out show in Little Whelan’s, a spot at Ruby Sessions, and Brú Bar in Cork. Continuing the first leg of her European Who Needs This cycling tour, she’s back in a hi-vis jacket on her bike pulling her trailer and guitar through Wales, England, France, Belgium, and The Netherlands, adding on to the 7,300 kilometres already behind her.

About the Artist:

0Stella – that’s a zero up front – is ruthlessly authentic, blending alt-rock with traditional Irish fiddle and bodhrán to create catchy pop melodies. Honing her live show to adapt from solo to band, in far-flung venues and people’s backyards, 0Stella’s engaging storytelling through song and banter connects with audiences whether she’s singing in English or Irish.

Skyward singles Easy To Keep and Fighting To Get Along received support from US, Canadian, and Irish radio WDIY, Indie 101.5, CJSR, and Radio Nova while the video for Fighting To Get Along racked up more than 16K views on YouTube.

Freefall’s stand out-single of 2022, Weightelss, soared to #5 on the Top Ten Indie Songs of 2022 on 91X FM in Belleville, ON alongside the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Juno winner, Aysanabee. Her interpretation of The Waterboys Fisherman’s Blues received public acclaim from the song’s legendary writer, Mike Scott.

This autumn 0Stella is on her Who Needs This Tour by bicycle in Europe. Look for her on the road in hi-vis with her trailer and a guitar.
