Mimi O’Bonsawin Invites You Into Her Gnome Home on New Single “Steady”

Today, acclaimed singer-songwriter Mimi O’Bonsawin shares her most vulnerable song to date with her new single, “Steady.” Written years ago while sitting on a dock overlooking Lake Huron, the song captures a moment of deep self-reflection and the quiet reckoning that comes with learning who you are, and who you are not.

“I wrote this song before I really decided that I didn’t want to have children, before I really knew who I was,” Mimi shares. “Do you ever stop figuring out who you are? I sure hope not. Soul searching is my favourite pastime.”

At its core, “Steady” confronts expectations placed on women, particularly around motherhood, and the complicated emotions that arise from choosing a different path. Mimi speaks candidly about the constant questions she faces, the quiet guilt that can follow, and her decision to reclaim her sense of purpose.

“Everywhere I go, people ask me when I’m going to have children. And the truth is, I can’t… but I also never really wanted to,” she says. “I can’t help but feel like I’m disappointing people, but my role as a woman does not need to be tied to being a mother. I’m still learning how to be a daughter, a sister, an auntie.”

Rather than defining legacy through traditional milestones, Mimi views her music itself as an act of creation and offering. “I feel like I’m always birthing parts of my spirit into my songs,” she explains. “Every little bit of my heart is explored in music and shared on stage or on my records so others can find connection. That’s what I want to bring into the world, and I remind myself every day that that is enough.”

I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel
When I’m told that I’m wise beyond my years.
I’ve got so much to learn,
So many answers to seek out.
Like, what’s written in the stars
And, who lives behind the clouds.
And If I’m so wise,
Why do I have so many doubts.

All I know I know is that I’m one day older than yesterday.
One foot forward, the other one is keeping me steady.

“Steady” also reflects a broader meditation on time, presence, and honesty — acknowledging the tension of living with one foot in the past and one foot in the future, while learning to keep the heart grounded in the present. In a culture driven by constant expectation and noise, Mimi embraces simplicity as an act of truth.

“This song explores some of the most personal and intimate questions I ask myself,” Mimi shares. “It dives into emotions that are still too hard for me to talk about without getting emotional. It’s actually really hard for me to talk about things that are personal or difficult without crying… somehow singing and sharing it with the world is the easiest way to talk about hard things. This song made me see that about myself… I don’t think I really understood that before.”

The track features guitarist Marc-Antoine Joly, whose sensitive playing added depth and space to the arrangement. “I love the way he hears and approaches music,” Mimi notes. “It’s been an absolute joy inviting him into our music universe.”

Recorded with longtime collaborator/partner Ryan Schurman(drums/percussion), the studio approach mirrored the intimacy of Mimi’s live performances, prioritizing feel and musicianship over production gloss. “We approached this song the same way we would for a show,” she says. “I wanted it to sound like me and Ryan. I’m really proud of how it turned out.”

In a time marked by instability and uncertainty, “Steady” returns Mimi to her core belief in music as a shared refuge. “Music is a home that everyone can come home to,” she reflects. “It belongs to all of us and to none of us, and that’s the magic. When something is sincere and honest, it can live there. It can keep that house warm for anyone who wants to come in and sit for a while.”

With “Steady,” Mimi O’Bonsawin offers listeners exactly that: a place to pause, reflect, and feel less alone.

The song follows P8GWAS (meaning The Moon), her first single sung in the W8banaki Language, Aln8ba8dwaw8gan. A member of the Odanak First Nation, Mimi is at the beginning of her journey learning her language through courses offered by her community.

The accompanying video for “Steady” invites viewers inside Mimi’s log home, affectionately known as “the Gnome Home,” where her forthcoming 2026 album was recorded. Conceived as a window into her life as an artist, the video captures an intimate and honest glimpse of the creative process, reflecting how the energy and magic gathered from audiences on tour is carefully collected, processed and sprinkled back into the music.
Shot over a cold, snowy winter weekend in Eastern Ontario, the video offers a sense of refuge and warmth. “Mimi and I have been best friends for such a long time, and I’ve been around for most chapters of her musical career,” says director Alex McFarland of The Trenches Media Inc. “Steady’s video is a comfy, warm, and intimate look into Mimi’s life during the process of creating her new album. Being there felt like we were able to escape from reality and exist in a space where creativity could truly thrive.”
