On March 1st, the Canadian Tire Centre played host to a historic night of thrash metal as Megadeth brought their farewell tour to Ottawa. With support from Exodus and Anthrax, the evening was a celebration of speed, precision, and decades of metal dominance.

Exodus: Igniting the Fire

Exodus was the perfect catalyst to start the night. From the moment they hit the stage, the energy was relentless. The band wasted no time engaging the crowd, drawing fans to the barricade and sparking cheers that echoed throughout the arena.

The circle pit erupted early, a clear sign that the audience was ready for a full-throttle evening. Rob Dukes commanded attention, even stepping onto the speakers to get closer to the fans, fueling the chaos in the best possible way. It was the kind of explosive opening set that sets the tone for the entire night: loud, aggressive, and unapologetically metal.

Anthrax: Timeless Power

When Anthrax burst onto the stage, fists shot into the air instantly. Their set was packed with hit after hit, and with a catalog spanning 45 years, there wasn’t a word the crowd didn’t know. From longtime diehards to younger fans discovering thrash for the first time, the entire arena sang along.

What stood out most was the band’s vitality. You would never guess they’ve been at this for over four decades. Their sound was tight, polished, and powerful; the mark of seasoned artists who are more than comfortable in the spotlight.

Joey Belladonna was fully locked in with the audience, constantly moving across the stage, pointing out fans, and encouraging crowd participation. As one of the genre’s foundational acts, Anthrax proved exactly why they remain such a major influence in metal and why the excitement for them rivaled even that of the headliner.

Megadeth: A Farewell Worth Remembering

Headlining the night was Megadeth, delivering a performance that felt both celebratory and reflective. While the lineup may not include all original members, their influence as pioneers of thrash metal remains undeniable.

The curtain dropped as they launched into “Tipping Point,” immediately followed by “Dread and the Fugitive Mind,” setting the tone for an evening packed with classics. Though the energy leaned slightly more measured compared to the openers, the musicianship was razor sharp. Every riff and solo served as a reminder of why Megadeth helped define a genre.

There were moments of intensity, moments of reflection, and moments where the crowd simply stood in awe. For many in attendance, this wasn’t just another concert, it was a farewell to a band that shaped the sound of thrash metal for generations.

As the night closed, one thing was clear: March 1st at the Canadian Tire Centre wasn’t just a stop on a tour. It was a celebration of legacy, influence, and the enduring power of metal. A night fans won’t soon forget.
