Julie Neff releases fine!?, the first single from her debut album
After releasing three EPs, Julie Neff is finally preparing for the release of her debut full-length album: fine. The album will be released in 2026, but today (Oct 10), the artist shares the first single: fine!?. The difference between the two titles lies only in punctuation. In the song, the exclamation point and question mark express doubt, while the period in the album title represents acceptance of the journey. “Fine has many meanings depending on how you say it, and I’m playing around with that,” says Julie. “This song, like the entire album, is about healing — finding beauty and repair in the broken parts we all carry inside.”
fine!? talks about dealing with the uncomfortable feelings of living with depression and anxiety, while often having to pretend that everything is okay. The lyrics are deeply personal: “After years of living with chronic pain, illness, depression, and anxiety, I realized that the perception of ‘having everything under control’ can be dangerous. It means you’re less likely to ask for help when you need it, and your friends might have no idea what’s really going on with you. fine!? is my attempt to understand and give shape to that feeling, that pain — to make sense of it for myself and others. It’s a step toward allowing myself to be imperfect in front of people and to admit when things aren’t okay,” Julie explains.
Regarding the meaning of the title, Julie adds: “Most of the time, I feel like fine is a word used to deflect from questions like ‘How are you?’ or ‘How’s it going?’ when you don’t really want to answer.”
Artwork
Julie says the Japanese art of kintsugi was a key inspiration for the album’s visual concept: “The idea that you can repair something and make it even more beautiful by embracing the broken parts. We combined this idea with my love for fashion and makeup to create the concept of a deconstructed golden tear. The styling, hair, makeup, and jewelry reflect an image of perfection — except for one tear. Marina Mole, under Mole Enterprise, aided in art direction with stunning lighting references, and Bruna Hissae and team brought the visuals to life.”
LYRICS
fine!?
Beep beep, ring ring
Don’t know ‘bout you but I can’t hear a thing
They say “you’ve got fight, you’ve got fire”
But it left me alone through the night, no
I don’t know what to say
Feels like I’m getting lost in the fray
But I can pretend that all this time I’ve been on the mend
They say “she looks so good, must be fine”
But she’s crying on the inside
I’m stressed out, pressed down
I don’t know how I’ll ever live this out, but
Big smile, lift my chin
They say I can fight this from within
But, how do I manage?
I don’t know how to step back from the ledge, but
She’s good, yeah she’s fine, she gave us more than I ever thought she would
They say “she looks so good, must be fine”
But she’s crying on the inside
Oh she’s got no time to rewind
Yeah she’s dying on the inside
I’m not perfect
Do I deserve this?
Can’t find my worth
It’s so hard to surface
I’ll hide behind my desire to earn
They say I’m strong
But I say they’re wrong
She looks so good must be fine
But she’s crying on the inside
Yeah she’s got no time to rewind
Yeah she’s dying on the inside
I’m not perfect
Do I deserve this?
Can’t find my worth
It’s so hard to surface
I’ll hide behind my desire to earn this
They say I’m strong
But I say they’re wrong
