Interview with Shane Burrow & Prodigy + New Music Video “Carry Me Under” by BingeNinja & The First Seed

BingeNinja & The First Seed have recently released their latest music video, created by drummer Prodigy. The track was written under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms to ensure complete subversiveness, Shane Burrow tells us “It has become apparent to us both that the underlying theme of our lyrics are based around the idea that we had reached a point where WE were in control of where our emotional output was being put forth. With that being said, it becomes obvious we were in a dark place post pandemic and we were willing to rely on each other to carry each other below our comfort zone and really address the pain and anger we had accrued during that trying time.” This is the first video edited by Prodigy, and serves an intense mixture of nature and city, quickly strobing back and forth to create an effect that augments the experience of an already ferocious track. We had the opportunity to ask Shane and Prodigy about the track, the accompanying music video, post-pandemic life, what’s coming up next and more! Click below to watch Carry Me Under and keep scrolling for our interview with BingeNinja’s Shane Burrow and Prodigy!

You’ve recently released a music video for your single “Carry Me Under” can you tell us about the lyrics behind the track?

Shane: The First Seed and I made sure we were completely subversive on the approach of the lyrics by writing and recording under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms. It has become apparent to us both that the underlying theme of our lyrics are based around the idea that we had reached a point where WE were in control of where our emotional output was being put forth. With that being said, it becomes obvious we were in a dark place post pandemic and we were willing to rely on each other to carry each other below our comfort zone and really address the pain and anger we had accrued during that trying time.

What is your favourite line from the track?

Shane: “Fuck me like you mean it, kill me like you’ll never be apart”.

Kyle/Prodigy: “Bastard, yolk of my egg white, smash me to bits of atoms, zygote, selfish amoeba, perimysium”

The video serves an intense mix of nature and city shots, how did you come up with the concept for the video and what inspired the style?

Shane: this is Prodigy’s domain

Kyle/Prodigy: I had an extended period removed from nature and the wilderness after moving back to the GTA a number of years ago, focusing on work and life in general. About a year ago I acquired a DSLR and intentionally started getting back out into the great outdoors with the mindset of filming stock footage for videos and content just like this. Conceptually-speaking, I’ve always had a taste for intense, epileptic-style edits…you could take Converge’s “Axe to Fall” video as direct inspiration, for example.

What was your favourite shot to capture that was featured in the video?

Shane: Toronto skyline. And the wet moss.

Kyle/Prodigy: Definitely the goat.

What emotions did you feel while editing the video for Carry Me Under?

Shane: I didn’t edit it, but I love the layering. It immediately rang true to the visual landscape that we created with the auditory output.

Kyle/Prodigy: Honestly? Immediate release and fulfillment. I’ve never edited a video. Not one. Within an hour it felt like I was onto something. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be able to create this video carte-blanche, and it ultimately gave me that push I needed to commit to some final video edits, and to stop wasting so much creative sauce.

Are there any artists that inspired, or whose influence you took when creating Carry Me Under?

Shane: The First Seed, Autecre, Schizoid, NO BRIGADE, Egregious Philbin

Kyle/Prodigy: THUNDERCRAP. Converge. BingeNinja. Radiohead. Shawn Hook-Carleton. Adam MaCrae.

The track comes from the album New Age End Times, which was released in April. Have your feelings towards the album changed at all since it’s release, and if so how?

Shane: Yes. I am no longer in a bad place. But I give value to what we were feeling at the time.

Kyle/Prodigy: Just more love and plays for the record as a whole.

Now that live music has returned and the music scene is coming back in full swing, how has your summer been?

Shane: Spectacular. Shows, recordings and hangs.

Kyle/Prodigy: Ohhhhh man. Relentless jams, shows, and recording sessions. There is some seriously exciting stuff on the horizon.

What has been your favourite memory that revolves around music so far this summer?

Shane: Playing a show with all my friends bands: HORMOANS, Giraffe, THUNDERCRAP, Jay Spencer, AND ALSO watching PRODIGY KILL SHIT LIVE WITH HIS DEATHCORE BAND “DROWN”

Kyle/Prodigy: The NUMEROUS shows and impromptu studio sessions, as well as the media content that’s coming down the pipeline…

What can fans expect next from you guys?

Shane: finishing recordings for Prodigy and I’s new sassy electronic projects A$$HOLS. Also new full band BingeNinja recordings coming soon…

Kyle/Prodigy: New A$$HOLS EP is coming. The Animist LP & Egregious Philbin LP will be released sometime early 2023. Lastly there is the new YouTube channel, “Kyle Makes Something” which features a lot of DIY builds, dark synths, nature footage, and of course, METAL.
