Laurence DaNova Releases New Music Video “Resurfacing”

Laurence Danova’s hopeful new single “Resurfacing” represents a journey towards self-discovery, reconciliation, and escapism.

Inspired by a poem with ocean imagery written by his creative partner Anumalei, it’s a metaphorical narrative of finding solace and escape in an underwater world – a symbolic safe haven, away from the struggles and suffering of the land above. Shipwrecks are wreckages of the past that remind us of our resilience and strength.

“I wanted to create the ‘90s trip-hop anthem that never existed, alongside my co-producer Isaiah Gibbons. A lot of the song is built on small samples – from Bollywood-style strings to humpback whales. There’s an aggressive boom-bap beat loop, reggae-style guitars, and synth reminiscent of ‘90s electronic music!”

Director of photography Liam Grue executed the music video, an abstract story about facing the unknown and recovering from trauma. They shot the video in Ontario on Chantry Island within their 150-year-old lighthouse and lighthouse keeper’s inn, and throughout the Tobermory area.

“My favourite (and the most stressful) part, was shooting underwater with the Sweepstakes Shipwreck in Big Tub Harbour. The shots turned out beautiful!”

About Laurence Danova

Laurence DaNova grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, and developed a passion for singing and the arts at a young age. Exposed to a wide variety of musical genres, he began performing at school and local events. He sang with a band throughout his teens, experimenting with songwriting and producing. In 2018, he released a self-produced 5-track EP, Nine Hundred, with his former band, Vista Del Mar.

In 2019, he began working with producers to craft his unique sound—experimental pop, neo-soul, and alternative rock— on top of his diverse influences, including Björk, D’Angelo, Nas, Sade, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, and Terrence Trent D’Arby.

It was travelling — especially living in Southeast Asia — that most inspired his music. Laurence’s goal is to make music with an international sound that captures the essence of people and places, through emotive vocals and lyrics that convey struggle and triumph.
