I had the opportunity to join The Photo Roadies at Base 31 in Prince Edward County for a great night of music featuring Men Without Hats and Spoons. This was my first time at Base 31 and wow, what an experience! Base31 is Prince Edward County’s newest cultural destination, located on the site of a former 70-acre WWII air training base, which has been transformed into one of the most unique spots to see live music. Toronto has a lot of things, but nothing like this!
Men Without Hats put on a great show, filled with energy from start to finish. The band, led by the bariton voiced and very charismatic frontman Ivan Doroschuk gave Canadian new wave fans a night to remember, performing hits like Safety Dance, Pop Goes The World and their latest single I Love The 80’s, which really got the crowd going. Seeing as the group released their first album in 1980, it was really incredible to see the amount of energy and passion that the band brought to the stage, as if they’d never missed a synth driven beat.
Fun fact: The group’s name came about because the brothers, following a self-described principle of “style before comfort”, refused to wear hats during Montreal’s cold winters, calling themselves “the men without hats”.
